Overview of Alpha-ketoglutaric acid (AKG)
Alpha-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) is a naturally occurring compound that is involved in several important metabolic processes in the body. It is a key intermediate in the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle), which is a series of reactions that produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in the mitochondria of cells. AKG is also involved in the synthesis of amino acids, neurotransmitters, and hormones, as well as the regulation of blood sugar levels and the detoxification of certain compounds in the body. It is found in a variety of foods, including meat, poultry, and dairy products, and is available as a dietary supplement. Some people take AKG supplements for their alleged ability to improve athletic performance, reduce fatigue, and promote muscle growth. However, more research is needed to confirm these effects and determine the appropriate dosage and long-term safety of AKG supplements.
What’s the Daily Recommend Value of AKG?
There is no daily recommended value for alpha-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) because it is not considered an essential nutrient. The body can synthesize AKG from other compounds, and it is present in a variety of foods, so it is not necessary to consume AKG through dietary supplements.
We estimate from research studies that approximately 1,000 to 2,000mg per day may be appropriate for an age management program.
However, if you are considering taking AKG supplements, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate dosage and to ensure that they are safe and appropriate for you. It is also important to follow the instructions on the supplement label and to avoid taking more than the recommended dosage. Overconsumption of AKG or other dietary supplements can potentially cause side effects and may interfere with the effectiveness of medications or other supplements you are taking.
Alpha-Ketoglutarate Acid for Anti-Aging in Humans
It is believed that Alpha-Ketoglutarate Acid (AKG) offers some anti-aging benefits in humans. In a recent research study published in 2021, a product called Rejuvant was studied. It contained AKG along with additional vitamins and was given to 42 individuals who participated in the research study for a period of approximately 7 months. Researchers measured biological age using DNA methylation (DNAm) clocks before and after the 7-month period. Remarkably, individuals showed an average decrease in biological aging of 8 years.
DNA methylation (DNAm) Clocks - Overview
DNA methylation (DNAm) clocks are mathematical models that use DNA methylation levels at specific sites in the genome to estimate an individual’s biological age, which may be different from their chronological age. DNA methylation is a chemical modification of DNA that can affect gene expression and is involved in various biological processes, including development, aging, and disease.
DNAm clocks have been developed for a variety of species, including humans, and have been used to estimate the biological age of tissues, cells, and whole organisms. They have also been used to study the effects of various factors, such as lifestyle and environmental exposures, on biological aging.
DNAm clocks are based on the observation that DNA methylation levels at certain sites in the genome change with age in a predictable manner. By measuring DNA methylation levels at these sites and using a mathematical model, it is possible to estimate an individual’s biological age.
Although DNA methylation is not perfect, it has been found to be a more accurate predictor of human lifespan than chronological age. Therefore, it has a relatively strong association with biological health and age management in humans.
Alpha-Ketoglutaric Acid (AKG) may offer therapeutic effects as it relates to cellular and biological aging. We would consider recommending this to individuals currently on an anti-aging / age management bioidentical hormone therapy program, as these dietary supplements appear to offer benefits at a reasonably low cost. Because it is a natural molecule occurring in the body, reasonable amounts consumed appear to be reasonably safe. With that said, we don’t recommend anyone consume overly large doses without discussing this with a licensed healthcare professional. Also, keep in mind, there is no recommended daily allowance at this time.
“Rejuvant®, a potential life-extending compound formulation with alpha-ketoglutarate and vitamins, conferred an average 8 year reduction in biological aging, after an average of 7 months of use, in the TruAge DNA methylation test.”
